Local Information & Travel Tips

Location: Luxor is in Upper Egypt, about 650 km south of Cairo, straddling both sides of the Nile. The east bank holds most hotels and the main city life, and the west bank is home to many ancient tombs and temples.

Climate: Luxor is hot and dry year-round, with summer temperatures often exceeding 40°C. Winters (November–February) are warm and pleasant during the day but cooler at night.

Language & Currency: Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. The currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP).

Transportation: taxis, horse-drawn carriages, and river ferries are common. Public transport is limited, so private drivers or guided tours are popular for visiting archaeological sites.

Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit: November to March offers comfortable weather for sightseeing. Avoid peak summer unless you can handle intense heat.

Dress & Etiquette: lightweight, breathable clothing is best, but modest dress is appreciated, especially when visiting religious or rural areas. A scarf can be handy for sun protection or covering shoulders.

Stay Hydrated: always carry bottled water; dehydration can set in quickly.

Haggle Politely: bargaining is expected in markets, but do so with a smile.

Plan Early Starts: sites are less crowded and cooler in the morning, making it the best time for both photos and comfort.

Security & Scams: Luxor is generally safe, but be cautious of unsolicited “guides” or offers that seem too good to be true.

Cash & Tips: small bills are useful for tipping drivers, boatmen, and service staff; tipping is customary in Egypt.
