Discovering the Unexpected: A Journey Through Saudi Arabia’s Hidden Treasures

Brightsun staff member Ayda recently experienced a Familiarisation trip to Saudi Arabia hosted by the Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) and has shared her amazing Arabian experience.

When I first thought of visiting Saudi Arabia, I honestly had no idea what to expect. With all the things we hear and see in the news, I was curious but uncertain about what I’d experience, but this Familiarisation trip completely redefined my perspective. What I discovered was a land full of breathtaking landscapes, vibrant history, and some of the warmest hospitality I’ve ever encountered. From the ancient landmarks in Riyadh to the jaw-dropping rock formations in Al-Ula, and the bustling heritage streets of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s beauty and depth took me by surprise.

If you’re looking for a destination that blends natural wonder, rich culture, and unforgettable moments, Saudi Arabia deserves a place on your bucket list. Let me take you through my unforgettable journey to Saudi!

My journey to Saudi Arabia began with a direct flight to Riyadh with Saudia Airlines, and it couldn’t have been more pleasant. The cabin crew were warm and welcoming, the cuisine was flavourful and satisfying, and the entertainment options ensured the flight flew by smoothly.

A Warm Welcome in Riyadh

We began our adventure in Riyadh by diving straight into the rich heritage of Diriyah. This beautifully restored historic area was nothing short of breathtaking, with every detail celebrating Saudi Arabia’s deep cultural roots. As night fell, Diriyah came alive with a stunning light show that illuminated its history, weaving vivid visuals into a story that truly enriched the experience. It was the perfect introduction to the charm and depth of Saudi Arabia.

Later, we headed to Boulevard Riyadh City, which felt like a mini version of Times Square with its vibrant banners, flashing lights, and buzzing atmosphere. Packed with energy and entertainment, this was a perfect way to wrap up our day, experiencing both the heritage and modern spirit of Riyadh in one go.

The Wonders of Al-Ula

Al-Ula was the absolute highlight of the trip for me and truly one of the most awe-inspiring places I’ve ever visited. The landscape is a breathtaking mix of vast sand dunes and rugged rock formations that stretch endlessly across the horizon. We stayed at the Shaden Hotel, and one evening, we were treated to an unforgettable stargazing experience at Al-Gharamel. Our guide took us on a celestial journey through the night sky, exploring constellations and even glimpsing the planets Pluto and Saturn. The desert sky was so clear that each star seemed to shine just for us, and it felt surreal to be surrounded by such beauty, sitting around a fire and enjoying a traditional Bedouin-style dinner. It was a magical night, one that truly captured the wonder of Al-Ula.

We visited and explored some unique hotels in Al-Ula, including Cloud7, Habitas, and the Banyan Tree, each offering a different take on eco-luxury in the desert. Maraya Theater, the world’s largest mirrored building and a sightseeing hotspot, was another standout that we had the pleasure of witnessing, blending art and nature in such a clever way. We also got to discover Elephant Rock, an iconic formation that truly resembles a massive elephant standing guard in the desert. Al-Ula’s ancient charm and breathtaking views left a lasting impression. If you look closely at the surrounding rock formations, you’ll notice that they almost seem to form faces and human-like shapes, adding to the mystical feel of the landscape.

In Al-Ula we also explored the Nabatean tombs, which were another highlight for me. If you’re fascinated by Petra, you’ll be blown away by these tombs, which is like discovering hundreds of smaller versions of Petra, scattered across the Saudi desert. Each tomb carries its own history and architectural style, carved directly into the cliffs and preserved through the centuries. Al-Ula is truly a must-visit for anyone who loves nature and history; it’s a place that surprises and captivates at every turn.

Discovering the Spiritual Side of Madinah

From Al-Ula, we journeyed to Madinah, where our first stop was the International Fair and Museum of the Prophet’s Biography and Islamic Civilization. This museum offered an incredible introduction to Islamic culture and history, deepening our understanding of Madinah’s significance. Later, we visited Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Mosque—a place of profound peace and humility.

Afterward, we explored the bustling souks, which were a vibrant contrast to the calm of the mosque. The markets were full of traditional crafts, spices, and an impressive variety of dates. Madinah is famous for its Ajwa date, known for its health benefits and distinctive taste. Shopping for these delicious dates, along with other treasures, made for a perfect afternoon of exploring Madinah’s local culture and flavours.

The Vibrancy of Jeddah

Our last stop on this trip was Jeddah, a city that feels like the perfect blend of old and new. We visited TeamLab, a breathtaking modern art exhibit by Toshiyuki Inoko, filled with digital installations that were captivating to experience. TeamLab Borderless, one of only three in the world, is a unique museum with no boundaries or maps, where the artwork flows seamlessly from one to the next. The exhibit creates an immersive experience that awakens your inner child, no matter your age, filling you with joy and wonder.

In the evening, we explored Al-Balad, Jeddah’s historic UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through its ancient streets, surrounded by traditional architecture and the lively atmosphere of the markets, we were reminded of the rich history that Jeddah holds. One of the most distinctive features of Al-Balad’s architecture is the Roshan, the intricately designed wooden balconies that adorn many of the buildings. What makes the Roshan so unique is that while people inside can see and hear outside, it’s impossible for outsiders to see inside, preserving the privacy of the inhabitants.

After admiring the architecture, we walked through the bustling Souk Al-Salad, where we shopped for souvenirs and famous Saudi fragrances. We ended the day with a delicious seafood dinner at Al-basali, a one-of-a-kind restaurant that serves some of the best seafood in the world. The owner refuses to franchise or expand, choosing instead to preserve the restaurant’s unique qualities and maintain consistent quality for all customers. We savoured local flavours and fresh seafood, capping off a memorable day in Jeddah.

Reflecting on this trip, I’m genuinely surprised and grateful for the beauty and hospitality Saudi Arabia has to offer. The landscapes, the cities, the warm and welcoming people - it’s a travel experience I’ll always remember, and I am grateful to STA for hosting such an incredible Familiarisation trip.

If you’re looking for a destination that’s both inspiring and different, Saudi Arabia is a journey worth taking, and I definitely recommend this destination for your next travel adventure.
