Malaysia Airlines recently introduced the sustainability blueprint and is commited to reaching net zero carbon by 2050. The airline already has 66 initiatives in place to help promote sustainability, including:

- Idle reverse thrust power used by pilots, allowing for 18kg of saved fuel per landing
- Taxiing aircraft with one engine instead of two, saving up to 50kg of fuel per flight
- Transforming wasted aircraft items into toiletry bags, aprons, and handbags
- Buildings installed with solar panels at Kuala Lumpur International Airport
- Reducing carbon dioxide emission on board by replacing physical magazines with digital versions
Staff Engagement
Throughout the pandemic, Malaysian Airlines launched the MHhomecooks YouTube page to support its staff who set up small businesses in selling traditional Malaysian cuisine. The airline also launched the MHartisans, encouraging employees’ entrepreneurial skills with hand-crafted items being promoted.
COVID-19 Safety Protocols
Malaysia Airlines has received a 7* Covid-19 rating, which is based on the following criteria:
- Covid-19 guidance
- Social distancing measures
- PPE equipment worn by cabin crew
- Compulsory face masks on board
- Deep cleaning of aircraft
- Personal hygiene kit
- Modified meal service
The airline met this criteria by serving individually packaged meals, providing passengers with hand sanitiser gel, wipes, and a face mask, thoroughly cleaning its aircraft at each turn around point, and wiping down hard surfaces with disinfectant.
