Where in the World Would You Like to go Back to? A Series - Gaurav

Brightsun staff member Gaurav shares the destination that he’d choose to re-visit time and time again. Hint – it's in India...

Where do you find yourself craving to go back when you’ve been to so many destinations?

For me, Amritsar. The city whispers to my soul.

Why is it that after exploring so many destinations, you always find yourself craving to go back to this specific destination? Is it nostalgia, a sense of comfort, familiarity, or something else? What exactly draws you back repeatedly?

Even after visiting countless destinations, the unique magic of Amritsar stays with me. It's a city that awakens all my senses with its vibrant colours and intoxicating aroma of spices. Amritsar remains a constant tug on my wanderlust.

In your extensive travels, can you recount a specific moment or experience from this place you often revisit that truly stands out?

The evening langar in the Golden Temple, Amritsar remains etched in my memory. As I sat amongst thousands of pilgrims, sharing a simple meal served with love, I felt a sense of belonging and community. Rhythmic hymns filled the air, creating a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere, despite the multitude of people present. This experience stands out more than most.

Over the years, places can evolve and change. How have you witnessed the transformation of a destination you frequently revisit? How does this evolution affect your connection to the place?

Amritsar, the ‘Holy City’ of the Sikhs, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years, and now has a blend of rich heritage with modernity. My connection to this city runs deep, and witnessing its evolution has been a fascinating journey.

While the iconic Golden Temple remains the heart and soul of Amritsar, its glow now illuminates a changed landscape. The narrow lanes around the temple, once solely filled with traditional shops, now feature modern brands that stand alongside the local artisans, offering a diverse shopping experience.

The city's culinary landscape has also evolved into a foodie paradise. The legendary Amritsari Kulcha and Lassi remain beloved staples, but international cuisines and contemporary cafes now tempt tastebuds.

The Amritsar skyline, once dominated by historical landmarks, now boasts modern skyscrapers. Amritsar International Airport has become a gateway, connecting the city to the world. Yet, amidst this progress, Amritsar takes great care to preserve its past. Old Havelis, with their intricate architecture, are being restored, serving as reminders of a bygone era.

With so many new destinations waiting for you to explore, why do you choose to revisit this particular destination?

While the allure of exploring new destinations is undeniable, Amritsar holds a unique place in my heart, drawing me back time and again. Despite countless unexplored corners of the world, Amritsar remains a city I return to because it’s my sanctuary of finding peace at the beautiful Golden Temple, plus I love the warm embrace of the people in the city with their genuine smile and hospitality.

Even when you've covered substantial ground, there's often a desire for more exploration. How do you balance returning to a familiar place with your drive to discover new destinations?

I have been visiting Amritsar since my childhood. I travel to the city at least 1-2 times every year and there lies a comforting pull towards this city for me, due to cherished memories and a sense of belonging.

Planning trips that incorporate both familiar and new destinations allows you to enjoy the comfort of revisiting a beloved place while still having the opportunity for discovery of new experiences.

Exploring new aspects of familiar places, looking for hidden gems, participating in local events, or venturing off the beaten path to uncover fresh perspectives and create new memories gives you the best of both worlds.

What are your favourite places to eat at (local or popular) whenever you revisit?

Amritsar has an incredible culinary scene catering to diverse palates. Whenever I visit Amritsar with my family, my go to places for food are pretty much fixed.

For authentic Punjabi cuisine I recommend Kesar Da Dhaba with its flavourful traditional Punjabi dishes like Dal Makhani, Palak Paneer, Rajma Masala, and Paneer Paratha; other top eateries serving this cuisine include Bharawan Da Dhaba and Beera Chicken Corner.

For street food, Lawrence Road is the place to be. A few classics to indulge in are the iconic Amritsari Kulcha stuffed with potatoes, the crispy Jalebis from Gurudas Ram Jalebi Wala, and the creamy Lassi from Ahuja Milk Bhandar. I also like going to Brijwasi Chaat Bhandaar to treat myself to a variety of traditional chaats like Dahi Bhalla, Papri Chaat, and Aloo Tikki, prepared with authentic chutneys and spices.

While well-known places often attract attention, there are hidden gems that hold a special place in our hearts. Could you reveal one such hidden gem you return to when you’re revisiting this destination and explain its allure?

Pul Kanjri - The Whispering Ruins. It is a true hidden gem of Amritsar, which proudly holds back its rich history. This historical site is located 35km from Amritsar on the Amritsar-Lahore highway and was constructed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1802. This red-stone caravanserai, overlooking the Beas River, once housed guests under its domed kiosks who now speak only through echoes.

What are the specific spots you visit all over again at this destination and why?

RamBagh Gardens, as this is where I can spend some quality time with my family away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Its geometrical arrangement of fruit orchards, lotus ponds, and ornamental plants like African Tulips and Blue Jacarandas (all introduced during British times) still emanate fragrances after almost two centuries.
