Where in the World Would You Like to go Back to? A Series
This month in our blog series, Brightsun staff member Zameer shares his experience of an off-the-beaten-path travel hotspot that he’d love to re-visit.
Which travel destination do you find yourself craving to go back to when you’ve been to so many?
Brunei, a sovereign state of Borneo.
Why is it that after exploring so many destinations, you find yourself wanting to go back to this specific destination? Is it nostalgia, a sense of comfort, familiarity, or something else?
Brunei has this magical beauty that draws you back, even if you’ve travelled far and wide to many places. It’s like a fond memory that you just can’t shake. Every time you think about it, a wave of nostalgia washes over you, reminding you of the inner warmth of its people, its serene landscape, and its rich culture.
Sure, I have explored other places, each with their own charm, but there is something about Brunei that has stuck with me. Maybe it’s the rainforests whispering stories of the past, or the gleaming temples and mosques standing as symbols of faith and tradition. Perhaps it’s the tempting beauty of local dining spots that still dance in your taste buds, tempting you to have just one more meal.

Can you recount a specific moment or experience from this place that truly stands out?
It became a balmy evening in Brunei, and I discovered myself standing at the private seashore of the luxurious Empire Hotel, watching out on the widespread expanse of the South China Sea. The sky turned into a canvas of fiery colours and golden streaks stretched across the horizon, casting a warm glow over the tranquil waters, as if nature herself had put on a panoramic display only for me.
As I stood there, mesmerised with the splendour unfolding before me, I couldn't help but sense a feeling of utter peace wash over me. The mild breeze carried with it the salty scent of the ocean, mingling with the candy fragrance of tropical blooms that embellished the resort grounds. Time seemed to face still in that second, as though it had paused to respect the beauty of this sundown.

But the magic didn't quit there. Just a stone's throw away from where I stood, the majestic silhouette of the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque rose towards the twilight sky, its sparkling white domes and golden minarets illuminated. It was a sight to behold, and a testimony to Brunei's wealthy cultural history and architectural beauty.

As darkness descended, I felt profound gratitude. In that fleeting second, surrounded by the splendour of nature and the elegance of human creativity, I realised simply how privileged I was to witness such wonders.
And so, as I bid farewell to the sunset and the mosque, I carried with me now not simply reminiscences, but a deep appreciation for Brunei, a place in which moments like these had been no longer just reserved for dreams.

These are just a few highlights of what Brunei has to offer.
Even when you've covered substantial ground, there's often a desire for more exploration. How do you balance returning to a familiar place with your drive to discover new destinations?
Even on your trips to other places, Brunei is still a beacon that beckons you back into its embrace. It’s not just about revisiting familiar scenes; it’s about rekindling the relationship you’ve built with this beautiful land. Each return will feel like coming home surrounded by familiar sights.
So yes, even though I have travelled extensively, Brunei holds a special place in my heart, always inspiring the desire to return and immerse myself in its wonderful embrace once again.
While well-known tourist destinations often attract attention, there are hidden gems that hold a special place in our hearts. Could you reveal one such hidden gem in your favourite travel destination and explain its allure?
In Brunei, we had a fantastic opportunity to interact with the local community at the Sibut Longhouse to learn about Iban customs and traditions and gain an insight into the rich cultural heritage of the Sultanate’s tribes. This was a hidden gem of Brunei that was close to my heart.
