The Christmas season starts in mid-November in Budapest with two Christmas markets being the most popular, Vorosmarty Square and Basilica. Vorosmarty Square is Budapest’s oldest Christmas market and is located in the heart of the city. You’ll find plenty of food stalls, handicraft shops, weekend folk dance shows and free music concerts. St. Basilica, the largest church in Hungary offers not only all of the above, but more such as Christmas laser projections on the church and an ice-skating rink around a grand Christmas tree. If you’re here on January 1, don’t forget to try some lencseleves, or lentil soup, traditionally made in Hungary on New Year’s Day symbolizing prosperity for the coming year.

Prague is postcard-perfect and ideal for the festive season. The city has plenty to offer, wooden stalls, traditional Christmas goods, hand-embroidered tablecloths and many other things but its food that will make you stay; fresh pancakes, Czech Christmas biscuits, garlic and cheese flatbread all of which could be topped off with local wine. The Christmas market in Old Town Square in the heart of the city is one of a kind in Prague and a must visit during this period.

The city centre in Copenhagen is home to many markets but the Christmas market at Tivoli gardens is the most popular one. With a ferris wheel, fairy lights draped on trees, a skating rink and the fragrant cent of cinnamon infused mulled wine in the air, it’s truly a treat to human senses. All the markets in the city pulsate with festive joy, lights and Christmas decorations.

Vienna Christmas market starts from mid-November when the city’s prettiest squares turn into magical Christmas atmosphere, Vienna is one of the best cities in the world and it looks even better covered in snow. Come Christmas and the city starts sparkling with fairy lights with decorated palaces and icicles dangling off grand Habsburg buildings. The traditional “Vienna Magic of Advent” and the Christmas market in front of Schönbrunn Palace are two most popular ones offering handicraft stalls, food carts, handmade Christmas decorations and Christmas concerts.

Dates: November 25, 2022 to January 8, 2023
Often dubbed as one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, Talinn Christmas Market also has a Santa that arrives by reindeer-pulled sleigh. However, the highlight of this market is its Christmas tree displayed in front of its town hall that has been here every Christmas since 1441 making it the first to ever be displayed in Europe. Come winter, the Town Hall Square gets filled with wooden stalls selling all kind of hand-made stuffs from wreaths to local arts and crafts, honey and sheepskin rugs. Music concerts and dance performances are regular in the weekend.
