9 Travel Themed Games & Activities to Get up to During Lockdown
Running out of things to do at home? Are you a travel lover? Then read on for some fun ideas on how to spend your time during lockdown throughout this pandemic.
We’re all going to be at home a lot more than usual in the coming days, weeks and potentially months due to the current pandemic, so it’s important to keep occupied, especially those with children – keeping them entertained will certainly be a challenge! We’ve come up with 9 activities and games, travel-themed of course that you can enjoy with your loved ones in the comfort of your home.
Travel Alphabet Game
This will certainly kill some time and stimulate your brain. All you need is a piece of pen and paper - write down the letters A-Z and start thinking of a country beginning with each letter. You can also do variations like cities, continents and landmarks. Reward yourself if you manage to write down an answer for all letters (no cheating of course).
Take Some Quizzes
Why not brush up your geography knowledge with a quiz night? If you’re at home alone you can do a video chat quiz with friends or family, or if you have others in your household then let them join in the fun. Sporcle is a great website for trivia with not only the themes of geography and holidays but also science, sports, music and more.
Write a Travel-Themed Story
This could apply to children or adults, whoever likes to get creative. Set yourself or your child the ultimate story challenge about travelling around the world, or to a specific destination. Maybe jot down some ideas on a bit of paper first like a brainstorm then pull something together. If you struggle starting your story, google ‘first line ideas for stories’.
Draw Famous Landmarks Challenge
Got some plain paper handy? Some pencils/pens? Then why not set yourself a fun and creative challenge and start making a sketch book of the world’s landmarks, from the Pyramids of Giza to the Statue of Liberty. Unleash the inner artist in you! You might enjoy it so much that you’d like to colour your drawings in too.
Create Your Very Own Travel Photo Journal
Have a browse through your photos from previous holidays and choose your favourite 3 for each destination to print out. There are many companies offering free photo prints, you’ll just have to pay for postage, or alternatively you can opt for a digital journal online. Create the journal with your favourite travel memories and write a little note underneath each image, explaining how you feel about it.
Dance Your Way around the World
If you have access to internet on your laptop, computer or maybe even your TV, your evening entertainment is sorted! Have a look into traditional dance routines / classes on YouTube for various countries and immerse yourself in culture in the comfort of your front room. Become an expert in everything from salsa and the tango to belly dancing and the bhangra.
Work on Your Travel Bucket List
Enjoy a daydreaming session and write down all the places you want to explore that you haven’t yet. This could be destinations around the world, or even places you want to visit in the UK or round the corner once this madness is over. If you need some destination inspiration, feel free to have a browse of our other blogs and our worldwide holidays.
Plan out Your Next Holiday (for a later date)
You’ve got extra time on your hands, so why not plan a future holiday? You could choose a destination, research what there is to do and where to stay – plan it all out and when the time is right, you’ll be ready to roll! We recommend that you look into 2021 departures, so that you’re not caught up in the current pandemic.
Purchase Some Travel-Themed Board Games
Have a browse on Amazon or eBay for some board games; some travel themed ones we like the sound of include:
- Ticket to Ride, in which players collect objective cards that they can use to build cross-country rail routes in North America and complete against their family.
- Sagrada, which allows players to recreate the stained glass windows of the iconic Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Players take it in turns to draft the glass pieces with dice.
- Explore the World which is a great way to brush up your knowledge about the natural and man-made world, countries and landmarks. It’s fun and educational - perfect for families.
