My first stop was the Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary in Pinnawala, Kandy. Immediately you are in awe of these beautiful animals. You can help bathe them in the shallow pools, and for the brave, take a bareback ride around the sanctuary – this will make any jet lag vanish! Then I went onto do a city tour of Kandy which included the peaceful Buddhist Temple of the Tooth, where many Buddhists come to do their pilgrimages and the Royal Botanical Gardens filled with wonderful scents of exotic flowers. In the evening at my hotel, we were treated to a Cultural Show with classical Sri Lankan dancing. Set against a starry sky, with a home made style meal, it was an unforgettable start to my trip.

The rest of my visit included climbing the famous Sigiriya Rock, a sixth century fortress perched 200m above ground, offering beautiful views. I also visited several Tea and Spice Plantations, including one in Matale with cinnamon, pepper and nutmeg. I purchased some Batik presents after I saw them being handmade, to go with my tea gifts! On my way back to Colombo, I also visited the Ancient city of Anuradhapura, and then after doing a city tour of Colombo, spent my last couple of days relaxing at a beach resort. The Beaches are still unspoilt and a haven for relaxing with unforgettable sunsets and white sand so soft your feet will just melt into the sand.
