Colombo is a city steeped in rich history; visiting here is like stepping back in time several centuries… There are lots of stunning ancient monuments to admire including mosques, temples and renovated heritage buildings. Must-see sites include the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque aka the Red Mosque of Sri Lanka which is one of the city’s oldest mosques and the Gangaramaya Temple, one of the city’s oldest Buddhist temples which now hosts as a museum, educational centre and place of worship.
There are many lush green spaces within the city, so there’s always somewhere serene to retreat to. The beachside Galle Face Green is one to note which is a famous sunset viewing spot, as is Viharamahadevi Park, the largest park in the city with lots of beautiful plants, trees, waterways, walkways and leisure attractions. From Colombo you can enjoy a day trip to Mount Lavinia Beach, a picturesque stretch of coastline less than a 45 minute drive from the city.
