Day 1: Airport – Negombo (15 km = ¼ hrs)
Welcome on arrival & transfer to Negombo. In the evening do a city tour of Negombo. Dinner &
overnight in Negombo.
Day 2: Negombo – Pinnawala (75 km = 2 ¼ hrs), Pinnawala – Sigiriya (124 km = 4 hrs), Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa (67 km = 2 hrs)
After breakfast at 06:30 hours drive to Polonnaruwa. Enroute visit the elephant orphanage at
Pinnawala and the “Lion Rock” at Sigiriya. Dinner & overnight in Polonnaruwa.
*Pinnawala:
This orphanage is probably the only one of its' kind and provides shelter to many elephants of all ages, found either abandoned as infants by their herds, or those found wounded in the jungles. The morning and afternoon feeding hours are the best times to visit the orphanage, followed by their two hour long bath in the river across the road from the orphanage.
*Sigiriya:
Climb the amazing rock of Sigiriya with its impregnable palace fortress built in the fifth century and enjoy the breathtaking views over the once magnificent royal pool, the throne, remains of the majestic palace, walk ways and garden. Sigiriya is a sixth century fortress perched on a 200 meter high rock and the most dramatic of Sri Lanka's historic sites.
Day 3: Polonnaruwa – Minneriya (23 km = ¾ hrs one way)
After breakfast go on an excursion to Polonnaruwa and visit this ancient city. In the afternoon go on a jeep safari to the Minneriya sanctuary. Dinner & overnight in Polonnaruwa.
*Polonnaruwa:
The Island’s medieval capital (11th 13th century A.D.) is situated 216 km. from Colombo and rose to fame after the decline of Anuradhapura. The city in its day was fortified with three concentric walls, beautified with parks and gardens and sanctified by many shrines. A unique irrigation complex known as the Sea of Parakrama watered the city as well as the surrounding plains. The largest man made reservoirs, the huge Parakrama Samudra, is larger in size than Colombo harbor.
*Minneriya:
Located between Habarana and POLONNARUWA, the 8890 hectares of MINNERIYA NATIONAL PARK is an ideal eco tourism location in Sri Lanka. The park consists of mixed evergreen forest and scrub areas and is home to Sri Lanka's sambar deer, leopards and elephants. However the central feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Tank (built in 3rd century AD by King Mahasena). During the dry season (June to September), this tank is an incredible place to observe the elephants who come to bathe and graze on the grasses as well as the huge flocks of birds (cormorants and painted storks to name a few) that come to fish in the shallow waters.
Day 4: Polonnaruwa – Kandy Via Dambulla & Matale (143 km = 4 hrs)
After breakfast drive to Kandy. Enroute visit the cave temple at Dambulla & a spice garden at Matale. Dinner & overnight in Kandy.
*Dambulla:
Dambulla rock temple is a magnificent gallery of Buddha images on the wall and ceiling paintings not seen anywhere else in the Island. It is a complex of five cave temples with its origin going back to the first 01st century BC.
*Spice Gardens:
On your way to Kandy in a suburban township called Matale, you will have the chance to visit spice plantations that grow a variety of spices such as cinnamon, pepper, and nutmeg, for which Sri Lanka was renowned and initially colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch and British.
Day 5: Kandy – Pereadeniya (6 km = ¼ hrs one way)
After breakfasts do a city tour of Kandy. Also visit the temple of the Tooth Relic & the Botanical gardens at Peradeniya. In the evening witness a cultural dance show. Dinner & overnight in Kandy.
*Peradeniya:
Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya is situated on the outskirts of Kandy. Established in 1816, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens spans over 147 acres. Flanked by the Mahaweli River, these gardens house all the usual features such as an orchid house, a spice garden etc. But what makes them special is the beautiful and serene layout, and the fine specimens of mature plants and trees which are also home to incredible colonies of flying foxes.
*Tooth Temple:
Located in Kandy, long a center of the Buddhist faith, the stunning 17th century
Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of the Lord Buddha himself. This precious relic attracts white clad pilgrims, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani, every day.
Day 6: Kandy – Nuwara Eliya (77 km = 2 hrs)
After breakfast drive to Nuwara Eliya. Enroute visit a tea plantation & a tea factory. In the afternoon do a city tour of Nuwara Eliya. Dinner & overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 7:
After breakfast drive to Kitulgala. Enroute witness the location of the famous film “Bridge on the river Kwai” at Kitulgala. 1 ½ to 2 hours rafting expedition which covers approximately 06 kms. Dinner & overnight in Kitulgala.
Day 8: Kitulgala – Colombo (90 km = 2 ½ hrs)
After breakfast proceed to Colombo. Dinner & overnight in Colombo.
Day 9: Colombo – Airport (35 km = 1 hr)
Departure transfer to the airport.
