Etihad Airways was set up as the National Airline of the United Arab Emirates in July 2003 by a Royal decree issued by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Services. Soon after, Dr Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan was appointed Chairman of the airline. Based in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, we started with an initial paid-up capital of AED500 million, with the twin objectives of creating an airline that would bear the UAE flag and extend true Arabian hospitality to our guests. Our name reflects this spirit: ‘Etihad’ is Arabic for ‘united’, and hence a symbol of the bonding among the seven emirates that constitute the UAE.
On-going redevelopment work at Abu Dhabi Airport has significantly enhanced the experience for Guests and allows us to expand and meet our ambitious growth plans. The second runway at Abu Dhabi International Airport, which was officially opened in October 2008, is part of a large scale AED 25 billion redevelopment and expansion project at the airport. A Midfield Terminal Complex will complete the redevelopment within the next few years, increasing the annual capacity to 40 million passengers. Etihad Airways Terminal 3 at Abu Dhabi International Airport, opened in February 2009, is dedicated to Etihad and extends the airport’s capacity by 5 million Guests per year. Etihad Airways has welcomed the signing of a new aviation agreement between the governments of the UAE and Australia which grants the Abu Dhabi airline up to 28 flights per week to Australia by 2010. Etihad Airways introduced a chauffeur service for business and first class passengers travelling to and from New York’s JFK airport from February 2007.
