Finnair, the flag carrier of Finland and widely recognised as the industry's IT leader, joined oneworld® in September 1999. It claims to be the fifth oldest airline in the world, tracing its origins to Aero, established in 1923.
Today, Finnair operates scheduled services to more than 60 destinations in approaching 30 countries, including 16 points in Finland. In recent years, it has refocused its longhaul operations on Asian routes - with its Helsinki hub ideally located geographically as a gateway between Asia and Europe. It now carries more traffic on these Asian services (measured in revenue passenger kilometres) than on its European network.
Finnair has anti-trust immunity with American Airlines and code-shares also with British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malév and Qantas
Beyond oneworld, it has commercial links with Aeroflot, Air China, Air France, CityLine, CSA Czech Airlines, Finncomm, Golden Air, Rossiya Russian Airlines, Lithuanian, LOT, SN Brussels, Swiss International Air Lines and Ukraine International.
In 2002, Finnair resurrected the Aero name, when it launched a new airline subsidiary operating out of Tallinn in Estonia. During 2003, it also acquired a controlling stake in Swedish carrier Nordic Airlink, which it has transformed into a low fares carrier to compete with Star's Scandinavian in its home market. Neither of these two subsidiaries are affiliated to oneworld. |

In Flight Meals
In Business Class on intercontinental flights you will be served food and drinks of a gastronomically high level and in tune with the times. Information about the food and wine is provided on menus, with the service taking the customer’s individual preferences and wishes into account. At the beginning of the flight, each customer is served with a bottle of fresh spring water to enjoy on the journey.
Due to the late departure time of the Helsinki-Bangkok-Singapore/Hong Kong flights (AY091/AY097), a lighter evening meal is served on this flight. Business Class passengers and Finnair Plus Platinum card holders can enjoy a buffet evening meal before the departure of the flight in the Long-Haul Lounge near gate 33.
In Business Class on European flights lasting more than two hours, Finnair usually serve a three course meal, which includes a warm main dish. On early morning flights we serve a varied and generous breakfast with a warm dish. On shorter flights, we either serve a warm or a cold dish, depending on destination and time of day.
On Board Entertainment
On the Airbus A340 and in Business Class on most of the Boeing MD-11 aircraft, Business Class passengers have a personal video system and display screen; on a few Boeing MD-11s Finnair offer a DVD player and a selection of movies and other entertainment. The video system on Boeing MD-11 offers 11 video channels, 16-18 audio channels and a power socket for a laptop computer. On Airbus A340 there are 9 audio channels and 15 video channels. There are a few adapters onboard, which you may borrow from the crew to use for your laptop. The video screen also shows the Airshow’s real-time information about the different stages of the flight. In Business Class on intercontinental flights you may ask the crew for a portable Sony PSP game console and games to use during the flight.
Economy Class
On intercontinental flights pillows and blankets are available in the overhead lockers if you wish to rest or if the aircraft feels chilly. On European and domestic flights a few pillows and blankets are available. The Economy Class toilets are located in the rear section of the aircraft. Smoking is prohibited throughout the aircraft and the toilets are fitted with smoke detectors. In the toilets of Boeing MD-11, Airbus and Boeing 757 aircraft there is a baby changing table.
Cabin lights are dimmed for safety reasons during take-off and landing, so that the level of lighting is not significantly brighter inside the cabin than outside. The lights are switched on again when the fasten seatbelt sign has been switched off. Passengers can use the reading lights at all stages of the flight, and the cabin should not be completely dark at any stage. General lighting is adjusted to conditions and according to the light level outside the aircraft.
The Finnair fleet is gradually being updated with the spacious and fuel-efficient Airbus A340. At the moment our first Airbus A340 is being used on routes from Helsinki to Nagoya, Osaka, Shanghai, and Tokyo. The Airbus A340, and in the future also the A350, and also A330 will replace our Boeing MD-11 on intercontinental routes.
In Flight Meals
The selection of meals and drinks served on flights varies depending on for example the flight time, the season of the year, the destination, the type of aircraft and the number of cabin staff. The menus change frequently and excellent wines are served to accompany your meal.
